UKIP warn of "Brinefields Toxic Dump Proposal"

The UKIP Hartlepool website reports...

A breaking issue is the "Brinefields Toxic Dump Proposal" which is a serous threat and needs bringing to the public attention. In my opinion the proposal to use the Brinefield caverns as toxic waste dumps is even worse than the possibility that the ghost ships will be dismantled in Hartlepool. I have always been against the ghost ships on the grounds of pollution, damage to the image of the area and the fact that in my opinion that the ships are coming here only to open the door for decommissioning of nuclear submarines at the site. However there are the counter arguments that the main bulk of the ships will be recycled and they will create work.

The brinefields proposal shares the pollution and image problems with the ghost ships but without the recycling or job creation pluses. The brine fields proposal involves waste being put into the ground and left there forever. Once again Hartlepool is under threat of becoming a dustbin. The threat is also more likely to go ahead than the ghost ships because the effects will all be literally underground. A few more lorries on the roads but no huge visible symbol like the ghost ships. The powers that be are relying upon out of sight is out of mind. At the risk of being too political this is exactly the sort of case the local MP should be watching for and ensuring the public is protected against. It's all very well to jump on bandwagons like the hospital but the smaller things (relatively) like this brinefields proposal are also very important and are exactly the sort of issues that UKIP Policy describes as being suitable for local referendums. Public enquiry’s and consultation are all very well but these disillusion many people, as they seem to listen to what people say and then ignore it. Local referendums would give people a real voice.

You can always tell the people taking part in by elections who've no experience of local government by the mess thye make of potential plannign issues.

There's a planning application before Hartlepool Borough Council; the council will decide it, not the local MP.

The UKIP have arrived on this issue about two weeks after the Libdems, who wanted to cynically use the issue knowing that Iain Wright, as a councillor, wouldn't be allowed to vote on or comment on the issue when it goes before the council if he's previously expressed an opinion for or against it in public....
